Healthy Living Supper Club

HLSC

Next Healthy Living Supper Club meeting will 7th September 2011. Watch this space for more details

The Healthy Living Supper Club (HLSC) was formed in April 1996 by Junko Murayama to promote a healthy and happy lifestyle. It launched a series of meetings with a vegetarian cookery demonstration, a guest speaker's talk on nutrition and other more general health issues. The distinguishing mark of the club is the emphasis on sharing together and celebrating the abundant life. It is known for being extremely welcoming with many members consistently attending for the last twelve years. It is currently based at Friends’ Meeting House at 45 St Giles, Oxford.

Healthy Living Supper Club is based on the health and philosophical aims of The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, a Protestant Christian Church with a doctrine totally based on the Bible. A characteristic feature is that it has a strong emphasis on Health; there are Adventist hospitals all over the world. The Church has promoted vegetarianism since its formation in the USA in 1860. NEW START is its program for a healthy, happy life style.

The popularity of the club ensures that there is a meeting once a month, at 7.00pm on the first Wednesday of every other month except January . So far the HLSC has organised Russian, Mediterranean, Japanese, Czech, Mexican, Venezuelan, Swedish, American, English, Indian, Chinese, Romanian, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish, African and Caribbean evenings. In celebration of the first anniversary a series of meetings in May 1997 entitled NEW START were held. Each letter is the initial of one basic element of health:

  • N for Nutrition
  • E for Exercise
  • W for Water
  • S for Sunshine
  • T for Temperance
  • A for Air
  • R for Rest
  • T for Trust in Divine power and each other

Each evening our guest speaker took us through one of the elements with practical demonstration such as relaxation, hydrotherapy, etc. The meeting concluded with a cookery demonstration and a supper.

The club is always happy to see new faces and you are more than welcome to bring friends.  Because of the many dishes the HLSC has featured over the years, one of its major projects will be to produce a cookery book.
